DIY Tent FootprintsUpdated 2 months ago
Does Teton Sell Footprints?
Yes — we do sell footprints for some of our tent models. These are designed to fit specific tents and provide the best protection.
At this time, we do not offer dedicated footprints for certain tents, so a DIY solution is simple, affordable, and works just as well.
Why Use a Footprint?
A footprint is a protective layer that sits under your tent. It helps:
- Prevent wear and tear on the tent floor.
- Keep moisture from seeping in.
- Make cleanup easier after camping.
DIY Options
- Heavy‑Duty Tarps: Easy to find in large sizes, durable, and cost‑effective. Best if you want maximum protection and don’t mind a little extra weight.
- Tyvek: Lightweight, water‑resistant, and breathable. Popular among backpackers and easy to cut to size.
- Polycro (window insulation film): Extremely lightweight and inexpensive. Ideal for ultralight campers who want minimal weight.
DIY process:
- Set up your tent and measure the floor.
- Lay the material flat and trace the outline.
- Cut the footprint 1–2 inches smaller than the tent floor.
- Optional: Reinforce corners with tape or grommets.
Key Tips
- Always size the footprint slightly smaller than the tent floor to avoid water pooling.
- Any of the options above can work for either large or small tents — it’s about your priorities (durability vs. weight vs. cost).
- If you’d like step‑by‑step visuals, many campers have uploaded helpful tutorials and videos on platforms like YouTube. These community‑made guides can walk you through cutting, sizing, and customizing a DIY footprint.
